This page describes exactly what First Year Dog collects, why, and how to get rid of it. It covers both the website and the iPhone app.

What we collect

DataWhenWhy
Your answers to the quiz — your dog's name, age, size, the behaviours you picked, your experience, time available, household and goal As you answerTo build the plan shown at the end and to decide what to build next
Your email addressWhen you enter it before the plan To send you the plan and, if you agree, occasional emails about the product
A photo of your dog — only if you choose "Check with a photo" on the breed question When you pick or take a photo To suggest a breed. The photo is resized in your browser, sent to OpenAI to be looked at once, and not stored — not by them for training, and not by us at all. Nothing is saved except the breed text you end up with
Campaign tags in the link you arrived on (utm_*, fbclid, ttclid, gclid) On arrivalTo know which advert brought you here
A random visit ID and which quiz step you reachedThroughout To count how many people drop off at each question. It is not linked to your email and does not identify you

We do not collect payment details. If you buy, checkout happens on Stripe and your card details go to Stripe, never to us. See Stripe's privacy policy.

What the iPhone app collects

The app signs you in and stores what you tell it, so your dog's plan is there on every device you use. Everything below is stored in our Supabase database, tied to your account.

DataWhenWhy
Your account: email address, and an Apple or Google identifier if you sign in that way At sign-upTo sign you in and keep your plan across devices
Your dog's profile — name, age, breed, sex, and a photo if you add one During setup and whenever you edit itTo build the plan and personalise the lessons
Training progress: lessons and steps completed, commands known, milestones, favourites As you use the appTo track where you are and pick what comes next
Photos you add to MomentsOnly when you choose one To show your dog's history in the app. Stored in our file storage
Walk routes — GPS coordinates recorded while a walk is running Only while you have a walk actively started To map and measure that walk. We do not track you in the background
Wellness entries and reminders you createWhen you add them To show them back to you on the right day
Household members you inviteWhen you invite them So more than one person can train the same dog
Messages you send to the in-app assistantWhen you send one To answer you. See below

The in-app assistant

When you message the assistant, your message and relevant details about your dog are sent to OpenAI to generate a reply. The conversation is also saved to your account so you can scroll back. Don't put anything in it you wouldn't want stored — it is a training helper, not a private notebook, and it is not a substitute for a vet or a qualified behaviourist.

What the app does not do

No advertising identifiers, no third-party analytics or advertising SDKs, no tracking across other companies' apps or websites, and no selling or sharing of your data for advertising. The app does not use your location except while a walk you started is running.

Cookies

This site sets no cookies and runs no third-party analytics or advertising scripts. The visit ID described above is kept in your browser's sessionStorage and disappears when you close the tab.

Where it is stored

In a Supabase (PostgreSQL) database hosted in the United States. The site is served from a server in Germany. Access is restricted: the key used by this web page can add records but cannot read them back.

How long we keep it

Quiz answers and email: until you ask us to delete them, or 24 months after your last activity, whichever comes first. Drop-off counters: 24 months. App data: for as long as your account exists.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account from inside the app — Settings › Delete Account. That removes your profile, your dog, your progress, your photos, your walks and your assistant conversations. It cannot be undone. You can also email us and we will do it for you.

Your choices

You can ask us to send you a copy of your data, correct it, or delete it, and you can withdraw consent to marketing email at any time — every email has an unsubscribe link. Email hello@firstyeardog.com and we will action it within 30 days. If you are in the UK or EU, our lawful basis is consent for marketing email and legitimate interest for the drop-off counters; you may complain to your national data protection authority.

Sharing

We do not sell your data. We share it only with the services needed to run this: Supabase (database), Hetzner (hosting), Stripe (payments if you buy on the web), Apple (payments if you buy in the app), OpenAI (the in-app assistant, and the optional photo breed check on the website), and our email provider when one is connected.

Note: this policy describes the site as it is built today. It is written to be accurate rather than exhaustive, and it has not been reviewed by a lawyer. Before running paid traffic, have it checked against your registered company details and the jurisdictions you are advertising in — and add the company name and address below, which are required in the UK and EU.
